Astrovirology is the study of viruses and their interactions in spaceflight environments. In our expanding effort to understand biology in space, this site provides resources for virus spaceflight data.
What is a virus?
A virus is a small non-living parasite. They are intracellular, infectious, and encased in a particle that facilitates cell entry via receptors on a permissive host cell. Viruses are a major cause of infectious disease and pose a threat to both life on earth and life in space.
Background virology knowledge is based off the curriculum from MM&I 575 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison taught by Dr. Paul Friesen and Dr. Andrew Mehle.
